Urmila Matondkar, renowned for her vibrant performances in Bollywood, entered a new chapter of her life when she wed Kashmiri Muslim Mohsin Akhtar on March 3, 2016. This union, however, was not without its challenges. Following their marriage, Urmila faced a barrage of trolling on social media, with unfounded reports suggesting that she had converted to Islam and adopted the name Mariyam Akhtar Mir. In the face of such speculation, the actress was quick to refute these claims, asserting her identity and beliefs.

In an interview , Urmila addressed the swirling rumors regarding her alleged religious conversion. She stated, "I do not appreciate this kind of politics. First and foremost, how does it even matter? I am someone who follows my own path. I take pride in who I am." Her remarks highlight her determination to assert her individuality amidst the noise of public opinion. While acknowledging her imperfections, Urmila emphasized that she has not engaged in any actions that would warrant shame.

Navigating the tumultuous waters of the film industry, Urmila recognized the importance of distancing herself from negativity, toxicity, and gossip. She remarked on the significant effort required to maintain a positive outlook in an environment often rife with disparagement. Thus, when the rumors of her supposed conversion surfaced, she found herself disheartened. "I am a Hindu and practice Hinduism, but I embrace a broader interpretation of it, rather than the narrow version often portrayed today," she elaborated. Urmila expressed that if she were to convert to Islam, it would be a decision made with pride, as such matters are deeply personal and should remain un scrutinized by outsiders.

As her marriage unfolded, it appears that Urmila's relationship with Mohsin Akhtar is facing difficulties. Reports have emerged suggesting that the couple may be on the brink of divorce, with rumors indicating that Urmila has already filed for legal separation. Despite the swirling speculation, neither Urmila nor Mohsin has released an official statement addressing the situation, leaving fans and followers to ponder the nature of their relationship.
