Originally, the film debuted at the International Film Festival of India in 1993 but faced challenges in reaching India due to the volatile political and communal climate which was followed by the 1992 Babri Masjid Riots. The that time conservative Hindu groups were critical about the animated portrayal of Hindu gods animated by Japanese production, which they believed could pose a risk to India's religious fabric. The ban was eventually lifted and the film was aired on Doordarshan.
