Hansal Mehta is all set to captivate audiences with his newest thriller, The Buckingham Murders. Starring the ever-talented Kareena Kapoor Khan, the film has already created a buzz following the grand reveal of its trailer. However, the excitement was met with a flurry of comparisons to the acclaimed Kate Winslet miniseries Mare of Easttown, leading some netizens to accuse the film of being a mere “copy.”

Hansal Mehta Claps Back at 'Mare of Easttown' Comparisons

The social media debate intensified when a user took to X to criticize The Buckingham Murders, suggesting it was unoriginal. The tweet read, “Mare of Easttown… God please! Plz get something original…” Mehta, however, responded with poise, urging viewers to withhold judgment until they had seen the film, saying, “Decide after you watch. Don’t jump to conclusions.” It’s clear Mehta is confident that his murder mystery will carve out its own identity.

Kareena Kapoor Khan, who plays the lead role, addressed the speculation about her character being influenced by Winslet’s performance. She clarified that the script for The Buckingham Murders came to her well before Mare of Easttown aired. Kapoor, who admires Winslet, stated, “Actors should draw inspiration from other actors; it is kind of a motivation to make you want to do better. I am a huge Kate Winslet fan and I watch her work closely.”

Despite the comparisons, Mehta has firmly stated that his film is not an adaptation of the HBO miniseries. For context, Mare of Easttown is an American crime drama where Winslet’s character investigates a small-town murder. The show concluded its seven-episode run in May 2021.

The trailer for The Buckingham Murders has already received high praise from both critics and audiences, generating considerable excitement. The film was well-received at the BFI London Film Festival 2023 and the 2023 Mumbai Film Festival, and the recently released trailer promises a suspenseful, edge-of-the-seat experience.

Kapoor Khan, who is venturing into production with this film after celebrating 25 years in the industry, is collaborating with Ektaa R. Kapoor, known for her successful commercial ventures. This project marks Kapoor Khan’s second film of the year following Crew, and she’s stepping into a new role as a producer with this suspense thriller.

Directed by the award-winning Hansal Mehta and penned by Aseem Arrora, Kashyap Kapoor, and Raghav Raj Kakker, The Buckingham Murders is set to hit cinemas on September 13, 2024. The film, predominantly in English with some Hindi dialogue, boasts an impressive cast including Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ash Tandon, Ranveer Brar, and Keith Allen. Produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ektaa R Kapoor, and Kareena Kapoor Khan herself, this Mahana Films and TBM Films production, presented by Balaji Telefilms, is anticipated to be a must-watch. Audiences are eagerly awaiting the film’s release and are excited to see how this mystery unfolds on the big screen.
